Prairie Athletic Club swim lessons are American Red Cross certified and taught by Water Safety Instructors. Below is a list of class descriptions. Read them carefully in order to place a child in the right level for his/her ability. Please click on the links below for specific class schedules and fees. Advance registration is required, either online or by contacting the front desk.

Parent Infant/Tot Water Orientation
(Ages 6 months-2 years) This class emphasizes parent participation and involvement with an emphasis on water orientation and adjustment. Instruction will be given on basic water skills that develop coordination and confidence in the water through songs, games, and activities. One parent per child is required in the water. Limit 15 participants.

Pre-Tiny Tots
Prerequisite: 2-3 years of age or pass Parent Tot. This class is designed for those 2-3 year olds who are not ready to be in a class setting without a parent but want some independence. This is a transition class from Parent Tot to Tiny Tots. Instructor will facilitate class with parent giving hands-on instruction with the child. Class limit 8.

Sea Horses (3-5 years preschool)
Pre-requisite: Must by 3 years old. An independent swimmer's first class. The goal is to become comfortable in the water. Skills taught: putting face in the water, blowing bubbles, kicking on front with support front float and back float comfortably. Fun songs and games allow seahorses to adjust to the water and be introduced to basic swimming skills. Class Limit 6.

Sea Turtles (3 - 5 years preschool)
Pre-requisite: Must be 3 years old and successfully pass Seahorses, see skills for Seahorses. Skills taught: swimming on front with face in water, front float independently, back float with support, jumping in from side of pool into chest deep water, retrieving objects under water. Key skills are face in water and swimming on front independently. Class limit 6.

Penguins (4-5 years preschool)
Pre-requistes: Must be 4 years old and successfully passed Sea Turltes. See Sea Turtle Skills. Penguin Skills Taught: Front/Back Float and glide, rythmic breathing, basic front crawl with out of water are recovery, elementary backstroke and jumping in from side then swimming to ladder independently. Class limit 6.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills (5-13 yrs)
Pre-requisite: Must be 5 years old and demonstrate comfort in the water. Purpose: Help students feel comfortable in the water, reinforce class setting with listening skills,and following instructions. Skill taught: Float on front and back, open eyes underwater, submerge to pick up object, complete underwater face, exhale underwater, swimming on front and back, and basic water safety rules. Class Limit 8.

Level 2 -Fundamental Aquatic Skills (5-13 yrs.)
Pre-requisite: Pass Level 1 or demonstrated competency in Level 1 skills. Purpose: Gives students succes with fundamental swimming skills. Level 2 skills taught: Front/back float with glide rolling over front to back, swimming on front/back using combined stroke, perform rhythmic breathing, treading water, retrieving objects from the bottom, water safety skills, and explore swimming on side. Class Limit 8.

Level 3 - Stroke Development (6-13 yrs.)
Pre-requisite: Must be 6 yrs. old and Pass Level 2 or demonstrated competency in Level 2 skills. All children entering Level 3 must be comfortable in deep water over their head,and must be able to swim 15 feet using front crawl with rhythmic breathing. Purpose: Builds on the Level 2 skills through additonal guided practice and help swimmers develop confidence in their strokes and improve other aquatic skills. Level 3 also presents the swimmers with new safety skills. Skills to be worked on: Front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, perform butterfly kick and body motion, underwater swimming and treading water, survival float and basic water safety skills. Class limit 8.

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement (6-13 yrs.)
Pre-requisite: Must be 6 years old, and pass Level 3 or demonstrated competency in Level 3 skills. All children entering Level 3
must be comfortable in deep water and swim one length of the pool combined stoke on front and back.
Purpose: Our goal in Level 4 is to develop confidence in the skills learned and improve other aquatic skills, emphasizing strong improvements in front and back stroke. Skills to be taught: Front/back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and scissors kick, coordinate butterfly, open turns on front and back, treading water, survival float, and stroke endurance. Limit 8.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement (8-13 yrs.)
Pre-requisite: Must be 8 years old and pass Level 4 or demonstrated competency in Level 4 skills.
Purpose: Provides further coordination and refinement of all strokes. Level 5 participants also learn to perform front flip turns, treading water with different kicks, backstroke flip turn, survival swimming and introduced to resuce breathing,the feet-first surface dive and alternate side breathing. Level 6 - Swimming & Skill Proficiency (9-13 yrs.)
Pre-requisite: Must be 9 years old and passed Swimming Level 5 or must be able to demonstrate all the skills required to complete Level 5. Purpose: Refine strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. This class focuses on swimming endurance. Class limit 8.

Private Swim Lessons
Prairie Athletic Club's Aquatic Department offeres private and semi-private swim lessons for adults and children. The lessons consist of four 1/2 hour sessions. The lessons are scheduled between the student and the instructor so class times are most convenient for all!
